ResponsibilitiesThis position is located in the Special Testing & Research Laboratory, Sterling, VA.
The incumbent will perform the following duties:
Serves as the agency's expert in theory and practice of organic synthesisDevelops, evaluates, implements, teaches, troubleshoots, and enhances new synthetic methods for the analyses of clandestinely produced drugs.
Interprets applicability of research findings to interests and needs of DEA and collaborating government, industrial, and/or academic agencies.
Performs experiments and characterizes products using instruments and techniques such as UV/visible/infrared spectroscopy, gas/liquid chromatography, nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectrometry.
Prepares reports, scientific manuscripts, presentations and lectures based on research results.

QualificationsBasic Requirements:
Applicants must meet ONE of the following qualification requirements:
(A).
Degree:
physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics.
OR (B).
Combination of education and experience -- course work equivalent to a major as shown in A above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
Minimum
Qualifications:
In addition to meeting the basic requirements above, applicants must have one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-13 Federal grade level in performing the following duties:
synthesizing, purifying, and authenticating reference materials used in the forensic analysis of drug evidence; conducting research on new methodologies for the analyses of clandestinely produced drugs; applying research findings to interests and needs of an organization; possessing extensive knowledge of organic chemistry, synthetic chemistry, and chemical characterization; serving as an authoritative source of information for internal and external forensic scientists; and preparing briefings and presenting findings to other government laboratories, scientific institutions, and industries.
