PHYSICAL SCIENTIST (CBRNE)

This position is with the Department of Homeland Security, within U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Teleforensic Center (TC), Laboratories and Scientific Services Directorate (LSSD), Operations Support Office (OS), located in Sterling, VA. The incumbent is responsible for conducting expert-level analyses and threat assessments of chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and explosive (CBRNE) materials utilizing detection systems using data generated in the CBP national security and countermeasure programs, or other government and non-government systems and programs as required. This position starts at a salary of $72,030.00 (GS-11, Step 1) to $112,240.00 (GS-12, Step 10) with promotion potential to $112,240 (GS-12 Step 10). This position requires professional knowledge of chemistry, biology, physics, or experience in various specialized fields such as explosives, drugs, and nuclear-biological-chemical (NBC) warfare, with special emphasis on radiological spectra analysis. Duties will include:
Gathering and performing advanced analyses of scientific data with minimal supervision, ensures the accuracy and reliability of scientific data included in reports, applications, or other scientific documents. Operating and maintaining several scientific instruments used to scan conveyances and cargo for the presence of radioactive materials, chemical/biological agents, explosives, and controlled substances. Training DHS personnel and government or non-governmental personnel on the identification of precursor and dual use commodities that can be diverted to the production of Weapons of Mass Destruction.
Experience:
You qualify for the GS-11 grade level if you possess 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, :
To be creditable, the specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-9 grade level. Examples include independent responsibility for a well-defined study or for a phase of a larger study that required the planning and carrying out of routine physical science work; selecting and making minor adaptations to procedures and accepted practices and handle unexpected conditions arising in the normal course of the work.
Experience:
You qualify for the GS-12 grade level if you possess 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, To be creditable, the specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-11 grade level. Examples include planning and executing complex physical science studies, which usually involved intensive investigations into recognized phenomena. FACTOR:
BASIC REQUIREMENT 1. A degree in physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics OR 2. Combination of education and experience-education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must meet all qualification requirements, including education if applicable to this position, subject to verification at any stage of the application process by 08/14/2020. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
