Supervisory Chemist

This position is with the Department of Homeland Security, within U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Office of Operational Support,Laboratories and Scientific Services Directorate located in Sterling, Virginia. This position starts at a salary of $102,663.00 (GS-13, Step 1) to $133,465.00 (GS-13, Step 10) with promotion potential to $133,465 (GS-13 Step 10). - Serves as a Branch Chief, a first line supervisor, supervising employees performing work in the physical and chemical science field at the Technical Data Assessment and Teleforensic Center (TC) - Provides assistance to the laboratory director and assistant director in the direction and control of the TC both technically and administrative l- Plans and assigns work to be accomplished by subordinates, setting priorities and preparing schedules for completion of the work. - Monitors and evaluates the delivery of services to customers, and methods and techniques used to provide them. - Interprets spectral data collected by spectroscopic screening devices as-needed or assigned to determine the presence of suspect controlled substances and chemicals. Individual Occupational Requirements Basic Requirements:
A. Degree:
Physical sciences, life sciences or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours in physics. OR B. Combination of education and experience -- course work equivalent to a major as shown in A above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics plus appropriate experience or additional education. TRANSCRIPTS ARE REQUIRED. FAILURE TO PROVIDE TRANSCRIPTS WILL RESULT IN LOSS OF CONSIDERATION. AND

You qualify for the GS-13 grade level if you possess 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, performing duties such as:
Reviewing all samples analyzed by the field laboratory for quality control, assisting in formulating sampling rates both in the field laboratory and nationally; and Advising on the technical adequacy of sampling methods, analytical procedures, and available analytical instrumentation in the specialty area Development and implementation of new and improved data assessment and technical procedures and methodologies Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must:
